TypeVelocity is a free typing speed test built for anyone who wants to type faster — or just see where they actually stand. It runs entirely in your browser with no accounts and no downloads. Just open and type.

Game Modes

Words Mode

Type one word at a time. A new word appears after each correct entry. Classic typing test format — good for building raw speed and clean accuracy. Words pull from a pool of 1,000 common English words, so you're dealing with real vocabulary.

Sentences Mode

Type full sentences generated from a database of 200 subjects, 250 verbs, and 1,000 objects, following a Subject + Verb + Object pattern. Better practice for real-world typing — you're dealing with spaces, rhythm, and longer text flows instead of isolated words.

Song Game Mode

A rhythm game inspired by Guitar Hero and DDR. Colored notes fall down four lanes, and you press the matching key when they reach the hit zone at the bottom. Miss too many and you lose lives.

Controls:

Scoring: +100 points per hit. Build combos for streak bonuses.

Difficulty Levels

All modes use a lives-based system — no countdown timer. Time counts up; the game ends when you run out of hearts.

Tips for Improving

  1. Use all 10 fingers. Touch typing is the single biggest speed upgrade most people can make.
  2. Keep your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. Cover the keys if you have to.
  3. Accuracy before speed. Speed follows naturally once you stop making errors. Seriously.
  4. Practice daily. 15 minutes every day beats 2 hours once a week.
  5. Try Song mode to build rhythm and key-press confidence — it carries over into typing speed more than you'd expect.
  6. Chase your rank. If you're a Jogger, you know exactly what it takes to become a Runner.
